There is nothing more precious to us than the breath of life. From that first gasp for air after leaving our mother’s womb to our final exhalation, we depend – most of the time without thought – on breathing in and breathing out. We are reminded of just how fragile our “hold” on life is when we hear the terrifying words, “I can’t breathe,” from a man lying in the street with a police officer’s boot on his throat, or from a woman in an ICU where there are no more respirators.
Etty Hillesum, a young Jewish woman whose breath was taken from her in Auschwitz, wrote, “Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths, or the turning inwards in prayer for five short minutes.” We agree and invite you to “Breathing with the Universe for Peace” on Monday evenings at 7:15 p.m. for 45 minutes. Together we can take some deep breaths and turn inwards for prayer.
